The Department of Zoology at the University of Dhaka, established in 1954 under the Faculty of Biological Sciences, is Bangladesh's foremost center for biodiversity documentation, wildlife conservation, entomology, fisheries biology, and animal physiology. The department confers B.S. (Honours), M.S., M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees with advanced specializations in Entomology, Fisheries, Wildlife Biology, Parasitology, Genetics, and Animal Ecology. Facilities include an extensive Zoological Museum housing rare preserved specimens, advanced histology and molecular genetics laboratories, and freshwater aquaculture tanks. Faculty members and researchers conduct critical scientific assessments on the Royal Bengal Tiger in the Sundarbans, migratory avian flyways, vector-borne disease control, and inland fisheries enhancement. Their scientific baseline reports guide the national biodiversity conservation strategies and the IUCN Red List of Bangladesh.
